Lay a Stepping Stone Path in Less Than 4 Hours and for Less Than $200

Walkways are a great addition to your outdoor living space, they can guide foot traffic from your driveway or sidewalk to your front door, or give you a clear path around the side of your house. Creating a path using stepping stones or patio blocks is a great weekend project that takes less than 4 hours and costs less than $200.

Materials you will need:

  • Stepping Stones or Patio Blocks of desired size and quantity
  • Level
  • Weed Barrier (optional)
  • Sand
  • Decorative pebbles (optional)

Remember to think about the design of your space when you’re choosing what kind of stepping stone or patio block you are going to use for your pathway. Also, don’t pick a surface that will get slippery when it’s wet or a dark stone that will get hot in the summer sun.

Step 1

Dig down approximately the depth of your stone plus 1” in the space where you want to lay your path. You can also cut the sod out in the shape of your stone and insert. This way you can mow over the stones instead of around them.

Step 2 (optional)

Place weed barrier over the soil. This ensures that your path stays weed-free for much longer than if you didn’t use a weed barrier. Then cut the weed barrier around each stone.

Step 3

Lay an inch of sand on top of the soil/weed barrier.  This allows the stone to fit snuggly without void space under the stone and will help with freeze/thaw.

Step 4

Lay your chosen stone about 6-8 inches apart or in whatever design you would like. Make sure the stones are the same distance apart and use the level to make sure that each stepping stone is level to the last one.

For a cleaner look, fill in pebbles around the bigger steppers in a complementary color.

A stone or patio block walkway is a great addition to your outdoor living space, and is one project that won’t take long or break the bank. At Lurvey, we have all the materials you need and the expertise to help you make the right decision for your project.
