Fall is The Best Time for Planting Bulbs

It’s always good to be looking ahead. The best and brightest spring flowers come from bulbs planted in the fall, so it’s never too early to start thinking about next year’s garden. Fall bulbs that are planted around the time of the autumnal equinox have plenty of time to grow out their roots during winter and pop up in the spring.

What Bulbs Are Best?

The best bulbs to plant in the fall are Tulips, Daffodils, Crocus, Snowdrop, Hyacinth, and Iris.

Many bulbs naturalize, such as Daffodils and Grape Hyacinths as they come back more robust each year.  They are also, deer resistant and perform well in the shade.  If you are looking for fragrance, Hyacinths top the list.  Plant in a sunny location near the front or back door so, you can enjoy the sweet smell of spring every time you go by.

Tulips come in many colors and love the sun.  There are early spring, mid and late blooming Tulips available.  You can plant to have non-stop color for weeks!  Consider planting a plentiful amount of bulbs for colorful impact.

When to Plant Bulbs for Spring

For best results, plant your bulbs relatively soon after you acquire them. The optimal time to plant your bulbs is after the summer heat is over, but before the ground starts to freeze. This will give your bulbs time to mature and get a good root system going before winter sets in.

How to Plant Bulbs

Plant the bulbs at a depth that is about three times the width of that bulb. Make sure to water your bulbs well after planting. Bulbs are relatively easy to plant and nurture, and can make the most beautiful blooms when spring comes around.
