How to Refresh the Surfaces in Your Outdoor Living Space: Cleaners and Sealers

Does your patio or walkway need a refresher? Applying a cleaner and/or sealer to your patio or pathway will give it a decorative, as well as a practical update. Here are a few tips on how to decide what product is best for you and your outdoor living space.

Cleaners

Cleaners are specially formulated to remove many common blemishes from numerous surfaces in your yard. It’s also strongly recommended that you use a cleaner before using a sealer. Different cleaners have specific uses. Some remove mortar haze, efflorescence, and mineral deposits; some dissolve coatings, epoxy, and urethane grout haze, paint, and adhesives. Others are specifically engineered to remove oil stains. There are many different varieties to choose from and it all depends on the needs of your outdoor living space.

Sealers

Sealers enhance the original color and strengthen the coat of your surface. Sealers also act as repellents on natural stone and concrete to prevent damage while allowing the concrete or stone to breath and release moisture vapors. This provides your patio or walkway with protection against water damage, oil and grease damage, bird droppings, and more. Just like cleaners, different sealers have different uses. Some sealers provide a wet or shiny finish, some prevent against tough stains, and some have different levels of penetration on different surfaces. Again, what sealer you use depends on the job you need to use it for. The best time to seal is when it’s warm and dry outside.
