5 Tips for a Festive Winter Container

5 Tips for a Festive Winter Container

Start a new holiday tradition with your family this year and create the festive joy of a winter garden! A winter container with fresh greens and colorful accents is an excellent antidote for the cold and dreary weather and will bring color and holiday aesthetic to your outdoor living space. You can build your own beautiful arrangements with a variety of materials you can find at Lurvey Home & Garden or from plants growing in your garden!

If you’re looking for a DIY project, here are five tips to help you create your own festive winter container:

1. Choose the right container.

Let the container be a reflection of who you are. Select a vessel with a festive pop of color or something more non-traditional, like a wheelbarrow or wagon.

After selecting a container, fill it with topsoil or sand to give it weight and keep your container from blowing over.

2. Your container is already frozen? There’s a quick fix!

Lay a branch horizontally on top of the soil and continue to lay branches by tucking or weaving the ends of the stems under each other. Keep going until your container is full and there is at least 6″ of an evergreen grid. Now you can insert upright accents that will stay secure in the grid.

3. Make sure to use a variety of greens!

When you start building your container, mix it up by including Spruce, Juniper, Pine, and Fir. These fresh greens add texture and depth to your design.

4. Mix it up.

Mix in bare branches like Red Twig Dogwood or Curly Willow can add a great touch of holiday color. Bare branches are also a great filler. Birch logs give a woodsy, textured look, while Curly Willow is more artistic.

5. Don’t Forget to Make it Your Own.

There are many ways to add your own signature look to a winter container. Pinecones are the first accent that we usually think of, but they are not the only possibility. Experiment with oversized Christmas bulbs, ribbons, lotus pods, berries, and more until you get just the right look for your container.

Winter doesn’t mean that gardening has to end. You can still exercise your green thumb by putting together a beautiful winter container arrangement.
