This type of natural stone comes in a variety of tones and can be used in a variety of ways. Understanding how this type of natural stone is made and produced is important when utilizing it for your next project.

Geologically, bluestone is a type of sandstone. Bluestone is widely known as a popular choice for dimensional pavers and irregular flagstone. In addition, it is commonly used for the architectural elements of buildings, such as veneer, stoops, stairs, hearths, sills, and thresholds. It can also be incorporated into interior tile, thin veneer, and countertops. It is appreciated for its cool tones that feature blues, greys, and purples, as well as some greens and rust tones. Bluestone gets its color from the different minerals that fossilized into the rock during formation. 

When talking about Bluestone, it’s important to understand the ways in which it’s produced and also how it’s dimensioned. The dimensional paving of bluestone is marketed in two formats or surface textures: natural cleft and thermal. There are many other surface textures that can be provided as well but these are the two that are predominantly produced and specified. Lastly, irregular flagstone is another type of bluestone that typically comes in a natural cleft surface in large sheets which can be broken or trimmed to whatever size and shape that you desire.
