Blooming Year After Year: Our Top Picks for Perennials This Season

It’s time to plant perennials! As summer draws closer, you can fill your garden with a number of different varieties of beautiful plants that will bloom season after season. We have a large selection of perennials, including those native to Illinois and the Midwest. So whether you have a sunny, shady, wet, or dry spot in mind, you can find a perennial to make your outdoor living space come to life. Check out some of our favorites for this season.

Natives

Natives are a great way to add a natural look to your outdoor space. Not every native will work in every garden, but there are so many to choose from that you can definitely find the one that works for you! Here are a few of our favorite native perennials for this year: The colorful Purple Coneflower (image included here) adds elegance to a garden and attracts useful pollinators. Pennsylvania Sedge is a beautiful and natural-looking grass. The amusingly-named Foxglove Beard Tongue provides a beautiful and unique flowering plant that is sure to impress!

Tried & True

If you’re looking for plants that are proven to perform in the landscape and will look great all season long, these plants have you covered. The ‘Millenium’ Ornamental Onion (image included here) is not the kind of onion you want to eat, but one that has gorgeous purple blooms all summer long that are sure to catch the eye. Grouping ‘May Night’ Salvia to tower over other plants will add depth to your garden. And, of course, you can never go wrong with the classically lovely ‘Goldsturm’ Black Eyed Susan.

Ornamental Grasses

Every landscape could use the height and flowing feel of ornamental grasses. Our picks this season definitely offer those details. One of our taller options, ‘Northwind’ Switch Grass, adds a definitively airy plume to any outdoor living space. Cascading grasses like Gracillimus’ Maiden Grass can add a graceful touch. Smaller grasses are the solution for smaller garden beds, and our dwarf grasses such as the ‘Hameln’ Fountain Grass (image included here) are a great accent in smaller spaces.

Our selection of perennials is extensive, so remember to stop by Lurvey Home & Garden this summer. Experts are on hand to answer questions and help you find the perfect plant to make your garden come alive.
