Thom Kenly

Design Express

Thom’s affinity for nature stems from his childhood exploration of the woods, quarries, and streamsides around his home in the Catskill Mountains of New York. After completing an Associate’s Degree in Horticulture at the State University of New York –  Cobleskill, Thom went on to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in Landscape Architecture at SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry.  Thom also did some post-graduate work in Restoration Ecology at the University of Wisconsin.

Thom made the move to Chicago in 2003 and worked at an area garden center in sales and design.   In 2012, he began working at Lurvey.  Thom loves when he can be creative using regionally appropriate perennials, grasses, and shrubs in the front yard setting to negotiate a clean yet free-spirited look; respecting the scale and features of the house as well as delivering reduced maintenance and longevity as a requirement.  Thom brings together his love of nature and knowledge of horticulture, design, and construction to deliver elegantly styled landscapes.

John Strait

Design Express

John grew up in Iowa in a country-like environment and began digging holes at the age of seven. He was fortunate to have full access to his parents back yard and experimented with hardscapes, digging up trees and creating dams and waterfalls.

After he completed his Associate of Applied Science degree in Horticulture at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa he continued his education at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa earning a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture degree in 1987.

Since then he has mainly worked with Landscape Design/Build Companies and gaining some valuable hands on experience. John joined Lurvey in 2021 and since then he has enjoyed every day. He has a design style which captures the surrounding landscapes and treats each property as a whole to bring that sense of continuity.

You won’t see much of John when the NFL season begins as he is a long time, 52 year Kansas City Chiefs fan,
so the game is on and the grill is fired up.
