Winter containers are in the making at Lurvey! Come join us at a Winter Container Workshop at the Garden Center to create one – or follow these tips to create your own.
Don’t let frozen soil in your containers discourage you. Lay a branch horizontally, on top of the soil. Continue to lay branches by tucking or weaving the end of the stems, under each other. Continue until your container is full and there is at least 6″ of an evergreen grid. Now you can insert upright accents that will stay secure.
Use a variety of cut greens including Spruce, Juniper, Pine and Fir. This adds texture, depth and interest to the design. Blue Spruce branches also add a different color! You may want to consider a live evergreen in the center. The Dwarf Alberta Spruce is an especially good choice for this.
Use bare branches. Red Twig Dogwood branches provide holiday color to winter containers. Birch logs give a woodsy, textured look. Curly Willow is artistic. There are so many options for interesting and colorful bare branches.Experiment with ribbons, seeds, pine cones, Lotus pods, berries, and more, until you get just the right look for your container.
