Planting a tree doesn’t have to be difficult, you just have to have the right tools and know how best to approach the project.
Here are 7 simple steps to help you plant a tree that will make your outdoor living space beautiful for years to come.
- Dig a hole 2–3 times the diameter of the rootball.
- Make sure you don’t plant too deep. The hole should be approximately the current depth of the container/burlap ball or slightly less. Depending on the soil type – as deep (or less for poorly drained soils) as the root mass.
- Mix no more than 10% of the backfill with compost, peat moss, or other organic matter to help improve soil quality. Make sure to blend the mixture well.
- Occasionally, staking may be required when planting on a slope, in sandy soil, or in a windy, exposed location.
- Add a 2–3″ layer of mulch (never against the base of the trunk). This will help reduce water stress problems by helping the soil retain water and controlling competition from grass and weeds.
- Newly planted trees, shrubs, and perennials need special water attention for at least the first full year after planting. Once established, supplemental watering may be needed in periods of drought.
- Remember to water the soil at the base of the plant where the roots are. To avoid shallow-rooted, wilt-prone plants and mildewed foliage, follow these two rules when watering:
- Water slowly and deeply rather than frequently and shallowly, to encourage deep root growth. Allow soil to dry between watering, this will encourage roots to search for water.
- Learn the type of soil in your yard, including how it drains or holds water during each season. Water the ground not the air or leaves.
